VILLAGE OF WHITE PIGEON: What’s the Difference Between Personal and Commercial Auto Insurance?

Webp insurance01

Village of White Pigeon issued the following announcement on Aug 29.

If you drive a vehicle, you’re required to have auto insurance in nearly every state. The type of insurance that you need depends on how you use that vehicle. If you use your car for personal reasons, a typical auto insurance policy is generally appropriate. Using your car for business purposes could put you in need of a commercial auto policy.

Who Needs Commercial Auto Insurance?

For the occasional trip to a client’s office or running an errand for your employer, your personal auto policy may be sufficient. However, if you use your car to make money or drive as a regular part of your job, such as delivering pizza or driving as an Uber driver, you increase your risk of being in an accident because you’re on the road more than you would be for personal reasons.  You may need to review your coverage with your agent.

If you transport expensive equipment as part of your business routine, you have a higher risk of theft. Your personal auto insurance may not adequately cover you if your business equipment gets stolen. Therefore you may need to have a commercial auto insurance policy.

If you have employees who use their car for your business, you may also need a type of commercial auto insurance called an employers’ non-ownership liability policy to protect your company.  The policy can also be endorsed to include hired auto liability for any cars and trucks you rent or lease.

If you have commercial vehicles, such as mobile equipment, trucks and trailers, used only in the business, you should have commercial auto insurance. Commercial trucks are much bigger than regular autos and often have unique equipment, such as tow cranes, that make these vehicles much more hazardous in an accident.

Ask Your Insurance Agent About Commercial Auto Insurance

The type of policy you require depends on how and why you drive. You should discuss your business insurance needs with your insurance agent to make the best determination for your situation.
