Coronavirus shuts down both Michigan schools and prisons

Several cancellations have been announced in light of COVID-19 and the national mandate to practice social distancing, quarantine and self-isolation, according to The Daily Reporter.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer first announced last month that public and private K-12 schools would face cancellation, including Branch County school closures, now extending to the remainder of the school year.

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) previously announced that it would be stopping all prison visits indefinitely.

Lakeland Correctional in Coldwater also took measures to shut down many programs amid the widespread fear of perpetuating the virus.

MDOC Director Heidi Washington told The Daily Reporter, “This was not a decision we arrived at lightly, as we understand and recognize the importance of family contact with the prison population. Our primary concern has to be public safety and reducing the number of people who enter our facilities.”

Still, prison officials are working on developing electronic ways that inmates and prisoners can speak with their families.
