The Sturgis City Commission on March 25 approved the planned construction of a new development district located at 200 E. Chicago Road and 111 N. Monroe St.
According to a report in the Sturgis Journal, TWG Development, an Indiana-based real estate development company, requested the approval, intended to invite and promote high-quality business development with high-end architecture, site-design and landscaping for construction of the Monroe Lofts, an apartment complex.
The report said that once TWG receives the funding it seeks from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, it can construct a four-story building that will provide 40-affordable housing units to ages 55 and up. The site will also have approximately 1,700 square feet of retail space on the ground floor facing Chicago Road.
Tyler Knox, development analyst for TWG Development, told the commissioners the company was also approved for vouchers to designate six units for veterans, the publication reported.
The commission’s action approved a preliminary site plan and an amendment to a zoning ordinance, adding a planned development district zoning to be effective on Friday, April 17.
TWG needs to submit a final site plan to the Planning Commission before the construction of the project.
