Description

The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society invites you to step back in time to an era of steam whistles and fluttering flags at their newest exhibit, "Don't Miss the Boat." The exhibit highlights the historic ferries of Little Traverse Bay and features original watercolors by artist William Talmadge Hall.

In 1875 the first ferry company was organized by P. Chrysler to ply a route between Harbor Springs and Petoskey. After that, ferries ran regularly until 1930, when the Roe Bros. sold their last ship, the America, and discontinued service. At the height of the resort season in the early 1900s, ferries like the Gracie Barker and Silver Spray carried as many as 5,000 passengers a day to docks at Harbor Point, Harbor Springs, Wequetonsing, Roaring Brook, Bay View and Petoskey.

"Don't Miss the Boat" will be on display through the summer of 2021. Admission to the Harbor Springs History Museum is by donation. The Historical Society's Museum Store will also be carrying limited edition ferry posters and postcards to celebrate the exhibit.
