State Senator Jonathan Lindsey has introduced a bill aimed at reinforcing voter identification requirements in Michigan. The proposed legislation, known as Senate Bill 1034, mandates that voters present proof of identity and state residency when signing an affidavit to obtain a ballot at polling stations.
Lindsey, a Republican from Allen, expressed concerns about election integrity and criticized efforts by Democrats that he believes undermine democratic principles. "It is paramount that we strengthen voter identification laws and protect our election integrity," Lindsey stated. He added that public confidence in elections is waning, saying, "Confidence in our elections among the public is reaching new lows, and rightfully so."
The bill stipulates that if voters cannot provide personal identification and proof of state residency, they will be issued a provisional ballot. This type of ballot cannot be counted on Election Day unless it is later validated with approved identification.
Lindsey emphasized the importance of this legislative measure as a step toward securing elections in Michigan. "We cannot continue to gut election laws and promote systematic change that would destroy fair and free elections in Michigan," he remarked. He also described the bill as an "excellent first step toward making Michigan elections more secure."
