State Senator Jonathan Lindsey | Michigan House Republicans
Senator Jonathan Lindsey from Coldwater has expressed concerns regarding General Motors' use of taxpayer funds in Michigan. In a recent statement, he called on the company to fulfill its obligations to the state and its residents.
Lindsey highlighted that "for more than a decade, GM has used the acquisition of public funds to enrich itself but has failed to live up to its promises." He referred to the $3.8 billion received by GM from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority in 2009 during the automotive industry's financial crisis. According to Lindsey, despite this support, GM has dismantled much of its infrastructure in Michigan and still owes as much as $3.5 billion in credits through 2032.
He also criticized GM's involvement in a "$666.1 million corporate welfare package for the Ultium Cells Battery Plant," accusing the company of reducing its presence in Michigan for profit.
Lindsey expressed disappointment over GM's decision-making, stating that "yet again, we see GM move further away from its storied roots in Michigan and instead focus on demolishing its operations in our state." He mentioned concerns about potential additional funding of $250 million being granted to prevent the demolition of Detroit's Renaissance Center.
The senator concluded by urging General Motors to honor its commitments, criticizing what he described as "a trend of poor economic investment by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Democratic legislative trifecta."
