Description
About the exhibit:
The processes used by designers and scientists overlap in fundamental ways: both tackle complex unresolved situations, then conceptualize resolutions to them, and finally bring solutions to fruition. The work in the exhibition Design and Science investigates the overlap between these two fields and these shared processes through three distinct lines of inquiry: merging science and design through biodesign, data visualization, and visual metaphor.
As part of the exhibit, on October 3, 2019 in the Halle Library Auditorium from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Karin von Ompteda, a professor of Graphic Design at Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, will host a lecture titled Data Manifestation: Touching, Hearing, Feeling Climate Change. It will present data manifestation; the communication of quantitative information through objects, installations, and sensory experiences. This design practice has been developed over the past decade, and is here applied to the communication of scientific climate change data. What are the possibilities afforded by data manifestation to translate global climate change to the human scale, and connect it to people’s everyday lives?
