Ismael's Ghosts (FRANCE, 2017)
Arnaud Desplechin offers an intense and hugely enjoyable portrait of a brilliant dandy, an accomplished filmmaker Ismael, whose life is sent into a tailspin by the return of a former lover Carlotta (Marion Cotillard) who "disappeared" 20 years ago. Complications arise with his current partner, Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who is as grounded and caring as Carlotta is cold and flighty...Desplechin contrasts this psychological drama with scenes from a subplot: the film Ismael is in the process of writing, an espionage thriller set in Tajikistan and the Czech Republic. Ismael’s Ghosts tells us that our most persistent ghosts are the living whom we’ve failed. The result is laced with references to some of Desplechin's former movies, cinema and literature, but primarily an infectiously energetic entertainment featuring vivid performances by some of French cinema’s contemporary greatest stars.
