City of Sturgis issued the following announcement on Aug. 4.

On Monday August 2nd, the City of Sturgis received notice from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) that due to issues at the state level, the Vinewood / E. Congress Street Improvement project approved at the last City Commission meeting is delayed indefinitely.  The issue stems from the fact that a portion of the grant funds for the project, as well as many others in the state, have been reserved but not formally appropriated by the State Legislature and Governor.

The funding in question is through MDOT’s Highway Infrastructure Program (HIP) Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA).  The City’s funding for the project is $71,370.  While these funds are not at risk of being lost by this delay, according to MDOT the project cannot incur any costs until the supplemental appropriation is approved by the State Legislature and signed by the Governor.  Moving forward could mean the loss of funding.

The City is still in the process of evaluating the notice from MDOT and attempting to learn more about the potential length of the delay.
