Illegal Burning diminishes tax dollars intended for emergency services

The Bronson Fire Department is experiencing an uptick in illegal burning complaints. The result: funds intended for responding to and mitigating emergencies are being expended responding to and extinguishing illegal burns.

You can help by following the burning laws set forth by the state of Michigan.

1. You need a burn permit for anything larger than a campfire. If you live in the Bronson Fire District, simply call (517) 369-6475 and leave a message with your name, address, telephone number, and describe what you are burning. If you are burning legal materials, leaving a message gives you a burn permit good for two days. Wait for calm winds and stay within sight of the fire while it is burning.

2. In Noble, Gilead, Bronson, Bethel, Matteson and Batavia townships, burning tree limbs, brush, stumps, evergreen needles, grass, and untreated paper is allowed. Burning of beekeeping equipment and untreated fruit or vegetable crates is allowed when done for disease prevention. Air quality regulations allow the burning of logs, brush, or charcoal for the purpose of food preparation or recreation (campfire). Burning of any material beyond this list is illegal.

3. Air quality and solid waste regulations prohibit the burning of buildings, as well as any construction and demolition waste.

4. Public Act 102 of 2012 prohibits the burning of household waste with the exception of untreated paper.

5. Open burning of any materials within the City of Bronson is prohibited by city ordinance. Small campfires are allowed in an approved container by permit issued by the Bronson Police Department.

If you have questions, please visit https://www.michigan.gov/.../org.../air-quality/open-burning or call (517) 369-6475. Thank you for helping ensure funds intended to mitigate emergencies are not used for response to illegal burns.
