Coldwater, Mich. (16 Mar. 2023) - In support of March is Reading Month, the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) is dedicating time to teach electrical safety and read to local students. CBPU-organized events have employees reading "If I Were a Lineworker," which is a book that focuses on the impact a public power provider has on the community. It takes students through the responsibilities of a lineworker and the safety requirements needed to complete their work.
Building on this, the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities also added an electrical safety demonstration for students. This safety demonstration utilizes a model and walks children through situations where they may encounter electricity. From playing near transformers, to flying a kite, the demonstration shows what can happen in dangerous situations and teaches students what they should do if they encounter them.
To conclude each CBPU-organized event, students viewed a bucket truck, lineworker safety equipment, and what a downed powerline might look like. In partnership with local schools, the CBPU organized events at Jefferson Elementary School, Max Larsen Elementary School, and Pansophia Academy. Additionally, the CBPU is making efforts to participate in the United Way's United We Read Event.
