State Representative Jennifer Wortz has proposed a plan to overturn a ban on deer baiting in Michigan. The current prohibition, enacted by the Natural Resources Commission, aims to prevent deer from gathering and spreading diseases. However, Wortz argues that this measure is ineffective as it leads to deer congregating in crop fields instead, causing damage.

Wortz's proposal addresses issues of deer overpopulation which have resulted in increased crop damage and vehicle collisions. She has also introduced an initiative to encourage doe hunting as a means of managing the state's deer population.

"For years, unelected bureaucrats have interfered with Michigan deer hunters in the most ridiculous ways," said Wortz. "The ban on deer baiting robs hunters of freedom and takes away a commonsense hunting tactic. This over-the-top mandate makes even less sense right now, with deer overpopulation wreaking havoc for farmers, gardeners, and drivers across Michigan. My plan will stop government overreach and restore freedom for hunters."

House Bill 4445, introduced by Wortz, seeks to permit hunters to use feed as an aid in hunting deer. The bill has been sent to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism for consideration.
